The plumbing is complete! The framing is done and we are ready for inspections
Looking back it has actually been an long road here are some pictures of the long haul
So, Why are we taking up the floor?
Short answer, we needed to add structure below to support the sagging stairs at the center of the house and kitchen island, but also to rectify a large 4" hump in the center of the room (to get the floor flat).
As we started peeling back the layers we found 5 layers of floors.
1st layer 1990s shimmed plywood to flatten the hump and linoleum
2nd layer linoleum from the 1930's or 1940's
3rd layer 3/4" tongue and groove pine flooring late 1920's
4th layer floor cloths over newspaper from 1919 and 1920.
5th layer the original 1" tounge and groove pine floor.
These old planks were heaved in places , dry rotted in others and just plain missing in the far corner. Like i said, there was a huge hump in the center of the room. there was a scar on the floor where and old wooden sink and hand pump used to be. Just to be clear, I loved this floor. I pull my hand across the surface, i can feel the knots, they sit high as the boards are worn from foot traffic. This first floor layer was closed to foot traffic in 1920 when it was covered, with newspaper easily date able and the a few layers of floor cloths.
We saved every plank and have been using it to fix flooring in other parts of the house as well as other projects.
those are logs supporting the floor
Cleaning up the logs. Btw its like 4 degrees out. Propane heater blasting away.

What type of floor cloths? Were they salvagable?
